There is not much that truly scares me. However my blood ran cold today when my daughter’s school called to tell me that she slipped down a flight of stairs and an EMS team was on the way to take her to the hospital. Like most parents, the most unsettling thing that you can imagine is something happening to one of your children.
The weather in the city was extremely nasty due to the ice and snow storm that took place overnight. I had just gotten back from taking Moms to an early morning doctors appointment and was just ready to head out to LaGuardia to meet with my interns when I got the call. I physically felt sick as mind envisioned my baby hurt. I tried to call Ski but she was stuck on the subway and out of cellphone range. She is the one with the medical knowledge so that really added to my anxiety. I couldn’t wait so I ran over to the school. The EMS personnel were seriously delayed due to the bad weather so I was able to beat them to the school. I found Tita bruised but not broken and surrounded by many of her teachers and friends. She took a pretty nasty spill but was okay. In pain, but okay. I still let the EMS guys take us to the ER to make sure Tita was fine just to play it safe.
In the end all was well. Ski caught up with us at the hospital and the x-rays confirmed that nothing was broken. My daughter was gonna be sore for awhile but she will survive. Now if I could just say the same about my nerves.
