We rollin’ and they hatin’!

This is my boy’s first pass at shooting and editing his own skate video. He wants to get sponsored as an amateur skater and he figures that creating a promotional video is a great start. I had already given him a copy of Sony Vegas Movie Studio Suite, the video editing software that I recommend to people starting out. So he took a few of my low profile cameras and captured video of his skating runs around different parts of the city.

It had been a few months since I last saw him skate and it was shocking to see how much better he had become in such a short amount of time. My knees hurt just looking at most of the jumps and tricks he is now rocking. However what really impressed me was how good I the video was for a first timer. His use of wide angle shots and effective movement really added to the overall production value.

Now if he can just keep from breaking his @$$ again I will be happy.

We got drones!

Husban Quad Copter

The Husban H107 Mini quadrocopter, with built in HD camera, I ordered for Christmas finally arrived yesterday. This was fairly cheap and yet functional mini drone. I was interested in getting one for a few months now. I had decided to bite the bullet and snag one after visiting some of my colleagues in the media program at York College during a recent conference. They have integrated drones technology into various aspects of their new media curriculum, which covers everything from videography to programming. HTC RE – Time Lapse Test

This was my first attempt at time lapse video. I shot the video from my Manhattan office window and used the new HTC RE camera that I got for Christmas. It is a nice little low profile handheld point and shoot camera that captures HD video and 16 megapixel still photos. The camera also has a built in Time lapse feature and a built in wide angle lens for capturing everything you put in front of it.

The camera is also waterproof up to one meter (3.3 feet) for up to 30 minutes without an additional housing. The HTC Re is a periscope-shaped heir to the Flip and pistol-grip Sanyo Xacti pocket cameras while offering some of the durability of cameras like the GoPro. I have a Contour Roam camera that I regularly use when riding my bike and the RE stacks up very favorably to the action camera in terms of features and image quality.

New Media Technology Class of 2014 – Project Lab

Last night was the end of the semester for the Spring 2014 LaGuardia New Media Technology capstone class. Over the course of the semester we covered a great deal of material and developed some interesting final portfolios. This semester we even had one student with limited mobility participate remotely in a mixed hybrid/traditional format. I am amazed when I realize that this would not have been possible a few years ago.

Facebook look back: Cool or not cool

In recognition of their 10th anniversary, the team over at Facebook added this new feature that enables users to automatically generate a video montage of the most memorable posts, pictures and events that they have shared since joining the popular social network. Considering that the video was probably compiled and edited via a set of programming based algorithms, I have to admit that I was impressed at the end result of my video. However, many of my friends had different takes on the new feature.

One of my friends likened the automated video creation to coming home and finding a stranger going through your photo albums and pulling random pictures out. Another friend called the videos Continue reading “Facebook look back: Cool or not cool”

I might need to hit lotto

Apple finally got around to offering pricing and purchasing options for the new MacPro on their web site. Unfortunately the listing is just before the Christmas holiday and a tiny bit too late for me to ask Santa, or my wife, to put one of them under the tree for me this year. This is probably a good thing since the fully maxed out version of the MacPro with a 12 core Intel Xeon E5 processor, 64 GB of ram, Dual AMD FirePro D700 GPUs,  and a 1 TB internal flash base hard drive clocks in at Continue reading “I might need to hit lotto”
