I will not hurl: My First 5k Race

My wife talked me into skipping part of the 3rd day of the NY Comic Con in order to do something together as a couple. So I got up at 5:30am to drive two hours to Woodstock, NY to run in a fuggin’ Wine Festival Half Marathon. A WINE FESTIVAL! I hate wine. She is running the half while I am running the 5k. I haven’t trained or run like this in years. Pray that the spirit of Batman watches over

2014 NYC Marathon – Run girl, run!

I have started to lose count, but I think that my wife just ran her 13th or 14th marathon. I am not sure any longer. All I know is that this just one of the many times that I have stood out in the cold November weather cheering her on as she runs the NYC Marathon. The first time I stood in the crowd screaming her names was back in 1996, before we had the children. Since then the kids have joined me on the sidelines holding signs and shouting. Now it seems that watching marathons, and looking for my wife in the crowd of runners, has become a regular part of our routine in recent years. Maybe it is getting a bit routine for my wife as well. She almost ran right past us this year.

2013 NYC Marathon: Take that Sandy!

I am so proud of my wife for finishing her 11th marathon! So far she has completed marathons in NYC, Boston and Berlin. She had been eager to run NYC again because last year it had to be cancelled because of all of the damage incurred during Hurricane Sandy. It is odd to think back to exactly a year ago when instead of cheering her on, we were sitting in a dark apartment huddling around a transistor radio with friend that flew in from Norway to see her run. It was a miserable few days until the power came back on. Also, I had a fair amount of agita because this was the first major marathon in NYC since the Boston bombing earlier this year. My wife only decided to skip that race only because of a nagging training injury. We were lucky.

Fortunately the NYC race was uneventful this year and my wife made it to the NYC finish in slightly over 3 hours and 33 minutes. At first the kids and I were worried that we had missed her in the crowd and then, Continue reading “2013 NYC Marathon: Take that Sandy!”

Runnin’ for Chowda: Year Two

unnrace2
I just got off of the phone with Ski and was shocked to hear her sound so energetic. She slid up to Beantown this weekend to run in her second Boston Marathon and had just finished when I got her on the cell. I really wanted to see her run but someone had to look after the kids since they were back in school after a week off for Spring Break. It probably was for the best since the weather in Boston was cold and rainy and neither of us want the kids to catch any colds. Still, it would have been Continue reading “Runnin’ for Chowda: Year Two”

Runnin’ for Chowda!!

Half marathon

My wife continues to amaze me. Ski called a hour ago to tell me that she had survived and finished the Boston Marathon. This was only the third marathon she had ever run and yet as we spoke on the phone I noticed that she sounded exhausted, but still very hyper.

The kids were out of the house when she called. My cousin Miko had come down earlier in the day to take them for some ice cream and spend time with the kids. I told Ski that I would have them call and congratulate her as soon as they got home.

Ski didn’t have access to a computer so her “official” time was for the event was still up in the air. I immediately logged on to the Boston Marathon web site and took a look. Now I know that I am biased about her. I mean being my wife and the the mother of my children pretty much nullifies my objectivity. However it would be hard for anyone not to be impressed by the fact that her time for Boston was even better than her time for the NYC marathon.

Ski’s official time was 3:27:49. Man, I love my wife.
