Where my dawgs at?

My boys!!

Every now and then the tone of a day can just turn around and head in a totally opposite direction. This was the case today. The morning got off to a rocky start because I was still feeling like crap from the cold bug that has been floating around. I had meetings scattered all throughout the morning and afternoon and wanted nothing more than to call in sick and rest up. I was scheduled to lecture in the evening and the prospect of talking for a couple of hours with this cold was not something I was relishing. However just as I was expecting the day to be a total drag, two of my closest friends in the world called to see if I was gonna be available to hang out later that evening. It had been a couple of years since all of us were in the same place. So after my evening class I sucked it up and I went to go hang out wit’ my boys.

I have known Des and Jeff since we were all in the seventh grade at Columbia Prep. We have gone through good times and bad times. Hell, they have known me from back when I was sporting a high top fade and rocking Pumas wit’ wide laces. We know things about one another that even our own mothers don’t know. These are the things that tend to happen after 30 years of friendship. The funny thing about really good friends is that, even when you haven’t spoken for awhile, it is almost like no time has past since you last saw each other. There is a level of comfort and familiarity that is hard to have with people with whom you haven’t shared some of the best and worst times of your lives.

As I said earlier, it had been awhile since we were all together in NYC at the same time. It is understandable since we all travel a fair amount and are reasonably busy with work and family responsibilities. However we all still pick up the phone every couple of months just to see how things are going. It always seems that we talk far too briefly about family, friends and work before having to get back to the reality our day to day. I guess that is just how it is as you start getting older. I remember a time when rarely a couple of hours would go by before we would speak or see one another. Either we would be spending time playing sports, popping trash, talking about girls, or goofing around like most teenage boy are likely to do.

Des and I are both still in NYC, so we speak a bit more regularly than Jeff and I. Recently he and I have been hanging out more and working on a promising web venture. The name of the site is Ensideus.com. Des and I have taken very different paths but seem to have wound up at the same place in terms of our philosophies on careers and work. All I will say for now is that it hopefully will enable us to put into motion some of the plans that we have been talking about since high school. It is hard to believe that our 25th high school reunion is right around the corner.

Jeff on the other hand had moved away years ago because of his job. If he get back to the city once or twice a year it is alot. Des and I have given up hope that he would move back someday. New York is one of those type of cities that can lose it’s luster if you stay away too long. I think that is they case for Jeff now. I understand the feeling. I would move to Norway tomorrow if Ski and the kids would be up for it. Well, who knows what tomorrow will bring.

In any event it was good to see them.
