Late Night Workout for Insomniacs

My recent bouts of insomnia have made my workouts a true late night exercise. I am really starting to think that this must be how vampires live. It seems that the last few weeks have been a focal point for nearly every stressful event that I could imagine and it is starting to take a toll on my sleep patterns. I have always been more than a bit of a night owl, but this past week has been extreme even for me. For the past week I have been unable to get to sleep before 5am. Needless to say that I have been more grumpy than usual.

Stressful events seem to come in bunches and these last few weeks have been a doozie. Everything from having to redesign the entire curriculum for the LaGuardia New Media program, to supporting my wife as she trained for the Boston Marathon, to testing for my black belt in Shotokan, to preparing to test for the next level in Krav Maga has all made me mad anxious. My way of dealing with these events has been to express myself through exercise. The physical exertion of all of this negative energy has helped me a bit, if for no other reason that it pushes me to the point of exhaustion and enables me to crash out afterward.

The video above was taken toward the end of my workout. I generally start off with about an hour on the elliptical machine, followed by some pushups, situps, weight lifting, shadow sparring (kicks & punches), and ending with some bag work.
