Star Trek was such a huge part of my formative years. It is from this show that I first learned what would become my models for determination, friendship, tolerance, logic, courage and sacrifice. The portrayal of Spock by Leonard Nimoy was a large part of the reason that the show resonated so deeply with me and millions of others. At a time when people throw around the words like “iconic”, Leonard Nimoy’s Spock was exactly that.
The depth of the Spock character, and the philosophy inspired by the series, never ceased to amaze me. The Vulcan IDIC philosophy, which is short for Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations, celebrated the glory of creation is in its infinite diversity and the ways our differences combine to create meaning and beauty. The belief that it is our differences which makes existence worthwhile. This is tolerance at the most basic level, and for me, that is what Star Trek is all about.
Rest in Peace Leonard Nimoy. You will be missed but never forgotten.
