Fame can sometimes be a kick in the a$$!

Sometimes Fame can be a kick in the ass!As this year comes to a close it is ironic how people, places, and things from my past are starting to resurface as if almost by design. My recent re-dedication to the martial arts has almost seemingly summoned alot of my boys out of the woodwork. One of my old training partners, and dojo brothers, Fame has moved back to NYC after living abroad in Europe for the past decade.

I knew that Fame had been Continue reading “Fame can sometimes be a kick in the a$$!”

Oberlin College Basketball Scrimmage

Some of my old basketball friends from Oberlin have been bugging me to post this video for awhile. This is the intra-team scrimmage from the 1986-87 Season Midnight madness kickoff for the Oberlin College Basketball team. I still get a kick when I see how short our uniforms were back then.

Lazy Sunday

Krav Maga Gun Disarming Seminar

I was all set to head out to Staten Island today for a seminar on disarming a gun wielding attacker. The seminar was being held at Life Defense Inc., one of the sister schools affiliated with the Krav Maga Federation Headquarters. I had been looking forward to the seminar for the past two weeks but I felt that something wasn’t right with me yesterday when I was working out. Even my son pointed out that it seemed like I was tired when he came with me to Krav Maga class yesterday morning. I felt the chills coming on but just figured that it was just a slight cold from all of the running around that I had been doing during the week. Unfortunately when I woke up this morning Continue reading “Lazy Sunday”

What doesn’t kill me…….

Krav Maga Federation

…will only make me stronger. Well, at least that is what I have been telling myself  as I nursed the sore ligaments in my foot. The injury was a result of my decision to try my hand at Krav Maga again. I signed up for classes at the New York City Krav Maga Federation training center located in John Jay College about a month ago. I needed to switch up my exercise program before the winter arrived since, as many would suspect, bike riding in the NYC cold can be a bit harsh. Continue reading “What doesn’t kill me…….”

Da’ Bridge is over, da’ bridge is over

The Five Borough Bike Tour

Last Sunday Ski and I dropped the kids off at my mom’s place and rode in the NYC Five Boro Bike Tour. Now I know that I said that I would never ride with my wife again after the Great Norwegian biking debacle of 2007, but we do this race every year. It is a nice way for us to spend some time together. Plus since all of the roads are closed to traffic, there is almost no chance of me getting run over. I’m going clubbin’…..

Clubbin’Since the weather got cold I have been slacking with the exercise regimen. It is hard to bike around when you can’t feel the blood in your body. But with my 20th college reunion right around the corner I knew that I was gonna have to take some aggressive measures if I was gonna hit my old college weight before the event. Now I am not usually big on the whole health club scene. It seems like most people that join those clubs are more interested in looking like they workout as opposed to actually working out. But I like having a decent place to lift weights and sweat. Plus since I don’t want to ruin my knees running, and my wife won’t let me get one of those elliptical machines at home, a health club was a good compromise.

Runnin’ for Chowda!!

Half marathon

My wife continues to amaze me. Ski called a hour ago to tell me that she had survived and finished the Boston Marathon. This was only the third marathon she had ever run and yet as we spoke on the phone I noticed that she sounded exhausted, but still very hyper.

The kids were out of the house when she called. My cousin Miko had come down earlier in the day to take them for some ice cream and spend time with the kids. I told Ski that I would have them call and congratulate her as soon as they got home.

Ski didn’t have access to a computer so her “official” time was for the event was still up in the air. I immediately logged on to the Boston Marathon web site and took a look. Now I know that I am biased about her. I mean being my wife and the the mother of my children pretty much nullifies my objectivity. However it would be hard for anyone not to be impressed by the fact that her time for Boston was even better than her time for the NYC marathon.

Ski’s official time was 3:27:49. Man, I love my wife.
