Magical Court-side seats in Orlando

Jeff Ice and the fam

This year continues to have me reconnecting with old friends and loved ones. I had a great weekend in Orlando celebrating the birthday of my boy Jeff Ice. The only downside of the trip was that my boy Des couldn’t make it. Jeff, Des, and I have been best friends since 7th grade. We all have families and jobs, so we don’t get together as much as in the past. To say that Des was missed is an understatement.

I have to thank his wife Lex for setting everything up and bringing us all together again! She flew us down, put us up at the crib, and even made sure that we had the best seats in the house during the Orlando Magic game. Which I must add was hysterical because after I stopped playing basketball I kinda lost all interest in the game. However, during this sabbatical, I have watched more basketball than I have in years. And court-side seats are making me start to rethink my position. Ice hit the jackpot when he married her! We gotta all get together again before I have to back to work!

The Knicks really suck!

I went with Jonas to the Knicks game this afternoon. My cousin has season tickets and gave Jonas the tickets as a Christmas present. I had heard from a number of people that the team was really doing poorly this year but I was unprepared for just how bad. The Knicks really suck.

The final score of the game was 110-82, which sounds better than it was in reality. They were playing against the Charlotte Hornets, a team that is currently 14-24, and were down by nearly 50 points at the end of the third quarter. I haven’t seen someone get their ass whupped that bad since I was a teenager and came in three hours late after my curfew. I told Jonas to go ask the Knicks coach if he wanted us to go and suit up. We couldn’t have been much worse.

Randori Roundup

Ken Freeman

Pete Muldoon’s seminar from the other day got me thinking about my first Judo lessons, and has me wondering why I ever stopped. From day one you learn how to jump and fall, all while wrestling your friends to the ground. No katas or forms, just controlled roughhousing. Randori, as judokas refer to it. As a kid I loved it. And while I have always gravitated more towards of the striking arts, Judo was one of the first martial arts that I was introduced to when I was younger. Alot of time has past since those days. In fact it had been so long that I was shocked when my mother told me that it had been more than twenty-five years since my last Judo tournament.

I  started taking Judo while I was a camper at Kutsher’s Sports Academy back in the late 70’s and early 80’s. The summers that I Continue reading “Randori Roundup”

Oberlin College Basketball Scrimmage

Some of my old basketball friends from Oberlin have been bugging me to post this video for awhile. This is the intra-team scrimmage from the 1986-87 Season Midnight madness kickoff for the Oberlin College Basketball team. I still get a kick when I see how short our uniforms were back then.

An Oberlin event: Out on the town with old friends

It is rare that Ski and I get a chance to go out. For better or worse, this is just something that you get used to once you have kids. However, Mike Sorrell, an old friend of mine was in town and invited us to a special dinner concert that Oberlin College was holding at The Birdland Jazz Club. The invitation only event was hosted by the new president of Oberlin, Marvin Krislov, and featured the Oberlin Jazz Septet. Since I hadn’t seen Mike since our graduation from Oberlin almost twenty years ago, I made it a point to ask my moms to watch the kids for a few hours. I wanted to catch up with an old college buddy, and being a cheapskate, I figured that it wouldn’t hurt to take my wife out at the same time. Working out ain’t no joke!

Me after a workoutGetting back into the swing of working out regularly has been more of a challenge than I thought. However the upside of this change has been that I have started get back to my old playing weight. I got about another 10 lbs until I am able to fit back into my high school jersey. Now I just gotta get my knees in playing form so I can get my hops back. I really wanna get to the point where I can dunk easily again. Continue reading “Working out ain’t no joke!”
