Last Sunday Ski and I dropped the kids off at my mom’s place and rode in the NYC Five Boro Bike Tour. Now I know that I said that I would never ride with my wife again after the Great Norwegian biking debacle of 2007, but we do this race every year. It is a nice way for us to spend some time together. Plus since all of the roads are closed to traffic, there is almost no chance of me getting run over.
The tour takes the riders through Manhattan, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. The total distance for the tour is about 45 miles. I was a bit nervous since this was going to be the longest distance that I had biked since the fall. I have been working out all winter on the exercise bike at my health club, but it is not the same. The Manhattan section of the race was amazing because we had the opportunity to bike on the East Side Drive. The rest of the course is pretty standard. You basically ride through various neighborhoods in the five boroughs. The ride on the BQE and the stretch across the Verrazano Bridge into Staten Island was pretty cool too. Ski made it a point to comment on how short the Bronx section of the race was in comparison to the other boroughs. We both agreed that the Bronx doesn’t get the love it deserves. KRS-One would be pissed.
